Open Water

Entertainment: 2 Message: 2.5

What a pile of fish fertilizer. The documentary about the making of this movie is better than the film itself. What does that tell you? Open Water is disappointing and may cause “emotion sickness.” Made on a shoestring budget, the premise, camera work and results just don’t float. Sure, based on supposedly true events, the tale sends a message of caution about selecting a responsible dive boat company – but also unintentionally warns about filmmakers that want us to fear nature. The dialogue and dynamic between the couple stranded at sea only scratches the surface of what could have been an involving, in depth exploration of relationships, how to cope with uncertainty, or something of value. Take a surfing lesson instead (1 hr 19 min).
